I would call this a situational story in constant turmoil. It's an IFC (Indie) film that was done by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming. They co-wrote, co-directed and co-starred in it. Taken in segments, the film has some excellent acting and good scenes, some of them funny. However, as a whole, it's one long situation, a party, with diverse characters, multiple personal interactions, jealousy, tension, caring, neuroses and, of course, sexual attractions. The word 'love' is bandied about, but the story really doesn't move that deeply. It portrays the 30s decade with all its confusion and different attempts to sort out what life is all about.
Leigh and Cumming play Sally and Joe a couple that had separated, but have now reunited. The have an anniversary party to celebrate this. Joe is an author, with a book going into film and Sally is an actress. There are a lot of problems imminent between them and between various guests, so this gives rise to some acting out. But in place of any resolutions, the film ends as the party ends, a little wild and burnt out.
One fact that makes this film interesting is that several leading actors appear in support roles. Kevin Kline with his real life son and daughter are guests. Gwyneth Paltrow plays an actress, Skye, who Joe has chosen for his lead instead of Sally - just one of the conflicts. John C. Reilly plays Mac who arrives with a neurotic wife, Clair.
I consider this an adult film. Clothes disappear and a couple of nude women swim around, although that's more anatomical than it is sexy. However the party drug ecstasy is used and I consider that serious.
