Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon team in this comedy, which has a title that denotes the groupie activities of their characters as wild twenty-somethings. Hawn plays the free spirited Suzette and Sarandon plays the now proper Lavinia. Comedy requires absurd extremes and they are in this film as Harry, the uptight, hypochondriac writer, played by the Australian actor Goeffrey Rush, and Lavinia's much too proper family. The film was written and directed by Bob Dolan who you might remember teamed with Geroge Lucas to write the 1988 fantasy film, Willow. This film was his first time directing. The Banger Sisters is Hawn's latest film in a 34-year career that began with the 1969 film, Cactus Flower. I associate her with her comedy, my favorites being Private Benjamin (1980), Protocol (1984), Overboard (1987) and The First Wive's Club (1996). Granted, much of her work is silly, but I need a dose of silly every once in a while when things get tense. Also, her films frequently have an underlying core message, as does this one, i.e. be true to yourself.Saradon was a good choice for Lavinia since it requires a character transition and again it demonstrates the breadth of her acting ability. She has performed a wide variety of roles during her career and she has an Oscar for best actress in the 1995 film, Dead Man Walking that she keeps in her bathroom. Although her first film appearance was in 1970, and she has had nearly 100 significant film roles, several generations are most familiar with her as Janet in the 1975 cult film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.Rush will stick in my mind forever as the pianist, David Helfgott in the 1996 film, Shine that is based on a true story and one in which his character attempts Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3.

Hawn and Sarandon are only a year apart in age and in their late 50s. This in itself is remarkable considering they have careers in an industry that sends most actresses out to pasture at age 35 or younger. However the story line connects them to Jim Morrison, the lyricist for The Doors whose career spanned approximately 1966 to 1970. That's a lot more than 20 years ago, so we have to suspend belief a little for these two characters. Fortunately they look younger than their age.

I had fun laughing at the comedy scenes and this film catches the feeling of `letting go', something that happens to me on occasion dancing at a party. I also liked the music, which might have been The Doors, but I don't think so. And finally, Hollywood set or not, Lavinia had a `cool' pool.
