Christmas Cards

Betty Auchard was a music and drama student. Drawing pictures was just a hobby. But after raising her children in 1966, she returned to college to graduate with a teaching credential in art.

After retiring from the public school classroom in 1988, she became a practicing artist. While teaching watercolor in adult education, she accidentally discovered a "new" art form.
"With lots of experimenting, I found that I could make beautiful prints on paper and fabric with plants, flowers, or anything found in nature, including dead bugs. I thought I was so special to have invented this technique that I sent photos and letters to five different periodicals so the world could share in my discovery."

To her surprise, all five of them published articles about her "newly invented" craft.

Then one day a woman from Minnesota named Sonia Larsen, who had read the feature article in Sunset Magazine, called to find out who had taught Betty the art of "nature printing."

"No one taught me. I invented it."

She chuckled and said, "A lot of people have thought the same thing, but nature printing is an ancient art form."

Betty has since taught her personal version of the art at conferences and to children and adults in campgrounds all over the US and has sold one-of-a-kind leaf-printed garments, tote bags, and scarves, then printed note cards that resembled trees, creatures, and people.

"I now call myself a writer, (www.bettyauchard.com), but I still take sketchbooks when I travel and leave my camera at home, because that's the only way to get my drawing fix."
