Franchon Lyons Reviews:
The Little Rock was a great history and geography lesson. The manner in which Grandpa Jack systematically rolls from place to place was a great way to teach us all the wonders of the world. The Little Rock learned in his journey that sometimes you are not what you see yourself as and sometimes you are better. The Illustrations of Denny Rogers were accurate and informative. The end of the story was a surprise, but the moral is “Just be you”. The Glob of Mud accepted who he was but didn't know how much more he could be. He enjoyed his form as along as it lasted. He didn't mind being a woman's face mask or a little girl's mud pie. He enjoyed the baseball field as well as providing shelter and warmth for a family. We could all learn from a glob of mud. A Piece of Straw was intertwined with idioms and fairy tales that children of all ages will remember and love. The next time I have a drink with a straw I will think about this story and all the ways a straw of wheat can be so versatile. I liked the story of the Little Rock . My children and I traveled the globe as we listened and read. Books often take us outside of our neighborhood but this book introduced us to places that we heard of but never seen. Denny Rogers 's illustrations along with Grandpa Jack's poetry gave this book a good feel. The Glob of mud was kind and sensitive; he was patient and accepting of who he was. This story provided me with an opportunity to discuss self- acceptance and love. My son liked the story about The Piece of Straw. We don't have many fields here and it took a few minutes for us to understand the story. But once we did we really enjoyed it and thought about how many ways a piece of straw can be useful. I think this book, The Little Rock and other stories is a special book and will be a great gift idea for grandmas, grandpa's, parents and friends. |
