IN THE MIND’S EYE

The echo of delicate footsteps
A child’s game of Hide and Seek
“Home Free” –sounds of laughter
A procession of memories

Who is that in the garden?
You’re not supposed to be here
No children are allowed
“Ollie, ollie, oxen free”

A smile seems to erase the years
Such a wonderful game
The big oak tree was home base
“Come and find me” – soft notes float in the air

Why is that voice so familiar?
A solitary figure sits in a garden
Bound by cobwebs of a past that fled
“Last man home is it” – melody in motion

The smile reappears; sudden realization
Ghosts of the past have come to claim their prize
Blue eyes glaze over in an eternal stare
“Tag, you’re it”

A body; spirit released
“Last one home is a rotten egg”
No longer prisoner to frail bones and feeble limbs
“Ollie, ollie, oxen free – You’re It”
