It was supposed to be such a perfect match. A person in my building
made the introduction, swearing we would be perfect for each other. I
called and the conversation went better than I could have hoped;
clearly, it was time to take the next step. I made room in my
schedule without hesitation--I didn't want there to be any chance of
this turning into one of those "no, not this day, how about that day"
sort of things which might delay us seeing each other. On the
appointed date I was up early, and waited with such eagerness. Yet
after some time had passed, I began to worry that perhaps something
was wrong. I put my doubts down on paper, in this poem:
Most of the day
has now gone by,
And you've not come.
I wonder why?
If you don't call--
sheer misery!
My heart will break!
I yearn for thee.
Did you forget
your pledge to me
To run your wires
to my TV?
You said you'd come
from eight to five,
And not to leave,
just stay inside.
And though I have
some things to do,
I sit here 'cause
you asked me to.
I'm anxious as
the time ticks by.
I wait for you,
My Cable Guy.
Your hold on me--
you have such power!
I dare not sleep,
nor even shower.
I will not make
the slightest squeak.
I'll hear your knock,
however meek.
I barely move,
I am so cowed.
I cannot eat;
I chew too loud!
I'm just not sure
how to behave.
May I sit down?
I'd like to shave!
I won't give up
my faith in you
To install E!
and pay-per-view.
But slowly doubt
has filled my eyes.
Was I seduced
by all your lies?
What if it's true
I'm never able
To watch a show
on TV cable?
I'm anxious as
the time ticks by.
I'm waiting for
My Cable Guy.
