Timely Wishes
By Cara Alson

When I was six I told my mother,
“I want a doll with real hair.
I'm going to ask my fairy godmother.”

“Don't bother her for such a small thing,” she admonished.

When I was twelve I told her,
“I want a pair of high heels. I'm going to ask…”

“Don't bother asking for such a silly thing.”

When I was seventeen I shouted,
“I want a new mother!”

“Don't ask your fairy godmother,” she replied,
“she's not listening.”

When I was twenty-one I almost wished for a husband,
but Mother stopped me.

“Don't bother, she can't find one for you.”

When I was thirty-five, with a husband and children,
I was going to wish for time for just me,
but I didn't have the time.

When I was forty-five
I decided I wanted to be a writer,
and made a wish for time and talent.

> POOF! <

My Fairy Godmother arrived in a cloud of smoke.

“Fairy Godmother, will you turn me into a writer?”

“Why did you wait so long?
I have arthritis and poor eyesight, so I'm retiring.
You'll have to get it for yourself, kid!”
